Finding a work/life balance at Bedell Group
Sep 23 2008

Bedell Group staff, more customarily to be found at their desks exercising their grey matter on behalf of clients, are now embarking on a firm-sponsored course of Pilates to give their bodies a workout too.

The Jersey headquarted firm has organised 10-week courses at St Paul’s Centre, as part of its mission to support the overall health and well-being of employees, particularly to encourage those who don't currently take any other form of exercise. Staff have enthusiastically snapped up all the available places and can be found working on their core stability either before work, which offers an energising start to the day, or at lunchtime, which provides a valuable break from their desks.

The benefits of exercise to overall health are well-documented and Pilates Instructor Melanie Smith believes that Pilates is a very appropriate form of exercise for the Corporate environment. "Not only is Pilates a very safe form of exercise and one that can be accessed by participants of all levels of fitness, the level of body awareness and postural correction that it encourages can have very positive effects on the workforce for any company. With better posture and stronger abdominal muscles, there is less back, neck and shoulder pain and relief of a great deal of stress. I encourage my participants to go to their own level with each exercise and to use the time to focus fully on their own well-being".

The Pilates scheme is just part of Bedell Group’s ongoing commitment to its staff and its determination to help them find the work/life balance that works for them. Emma Pugsley, HR Manager at Bedell Group comments: “We are delighted at the enthusiastic response we’ve had to the Pilates scheme. Not only are people returning to their desks with renewed energy. It also provides an opportunity to meet up with people from other teams in the Group which helps to build internal relationships".

For the second year running, Bedell Group has been awarded a prestigious Best Companies Accreditation, which forms the basis of the Sunday Times Best Companies to work for list.
